Today, I had the wonderful privilege of sitting in teacher inservice sessions all day. Usually, these days are as exciting as watching a rabbit eat grass, but today, the afternoon session provoked my inner thinking. It was about the 40 assets that teens can have in their lives. The more of these they have, the more successful they are supposed to be in life. Some of these assets are love from family, community involvement, self-esteem, etc. As I looked over the list, I began to think that it's not just teens who need these assets, but adults need them, too!
As you look at your health, you are not just a physical being. You are a spiritual and emotional being as well. We are pretty complex creatures! Therefore, we can do everything possible to make ourselves healthy physically, but if we don't take care of the other aspects of who we are, we are not going to enjoy all of the benefits possible!
We did several activities as we circulated around the room to "experience" the various assets, and I wanted to share a couple with you. Perhaps they will bring you closer to experiencing a truly healthy lifestyle:
1) We traced our hand on a piece of paper. On the wrist, I wrote my name. On the fingers, I listed 5 people that I can go to for support. I of course listed my husband, my two best friends, my pastor, and my family.
If you can't list 5 people, then I encourage you to find ways to reach out for other people in your life. Join an organization, find a group that enjoys what you do (a baseball league, a book club, or perhaps a community theater). You will meet several people there that share your interests and could possibly become close friends with you!
Or perhaps reconnect with a friend with whom you haven't spoken in awhile. They may be seeking out someone to connect with, too!
THEN, on the palm, list something that is your passion. What is something in your life that you can't live without? It is almost the breath inside of you. I wrote down my faith and naturopathy. Both are passions of mine, faith of course being the most important. But I can't imagine life without them!
2) We were given paper sunglasses. The eye parts were shaped like stars, and we were told that we are all superstars in our way. We were told to list on one eyepiece what our biggest accomplishment (s) is. On the other eyepiece, we were to list a dream/goal of ours. I'll fill you in on a secret: We ALL have accomplished something! It may be eye opening to find out just what dreams you are holding onto inside of you!
I thought about my accomplishments of getting a teaching job in a premier school district in my area, of taking the big leap to study naturopathy.
My goals are many, but my main one is to raise children that are well-rounded, full of faith, and have the many assets we discussed in the workshop today.
I hope that you enjoy these two activities! Perhaps you will discover something about yourself that you didn't even realize!
